Adventure

Alternate Titles:Abenteuer, ADVENT, Adventure in Humongous Cave, Aventura, Aventure, Avontuur, Colossal Adventure - Jewels of Darkness, Colossal Cave, nuntalyli'u, Original Adventure
Authors:William Crowther and Donald Woods
Genre:Fantasy>Cave crawl
Released:1976
Review:

The original. What more can be said? This was the first adventure game; the whole genre is named after it. Without it, Infocom would have been just another maker of business software, Sierra On-line would be primarily known for adaptations of coin-op videogames, and Volker Blasius would have a life. A detailed description of this game's history and significance can be found in Graham Nelson's "The Craft of Adventure".

Ignoring the profound historical significance for a moment, it's a treasure hunt in a cave, like most of the early adventures (including Zork). It has a verb-noun parser, minimal detail, two big annoying mazes, magic words, nonsense puzzles, and occasional death without warning. None of this matters. Download it anyway. You cannot consider yourself a true adventurer until you've played this game.

There are many different versions of this game, some of which include additions by later authors. The original gave a total of 350 points. Later additions usually award a higher final score.

Darknite

Author:Anonymous
Genre:Fantasy
Review:

Minimalist. A good old-fashioned Scott-Adams-style adventure set in a castle. Your goal is to rescue a kidnapped king, but the game is basically plotless, in a way that I found strangely refreshing. Pretty large for its style, with oodles of one-use items, as if the author decided to go for scale rather than detail. Parser doesn't recognize some common adventure words - for example, you have to say "take" instead of "get", which annoyed me slightly.

Enchanted Castle 3

Author:Michael Wilk
Genre:Fantasy
Released:1987
License:Shareware
Review:

Dense in descriptions but sparse in the sort of detail that you can actually interact with, this game sports prose of the deepest purple seen on any screen. You find yourself in a strange castle, and must escape. There are three secondary goals: find a gem, rescue a princess, and destroy the castle as you leave. The parser is dumb and the save game feature is a magic spell that you have to find in the course of the game. Play it if you like reading descriptions of furniture.

Castle Ralf

Authors:Doug Clutter and Steve Vance
Released:1987
License:Shareware
Review:

A puzzle romp. The premise: You've gotten lost on the road and wind up at an abandoned castle. The former occupant is some kind of mad genius who left puzzles and other oddities scattered around to get in the way of anyone exploring the place. The style is goofy and full of self-consciously text-adventure-like situations. Puzzles are hard, but fair. The user interface is interesting: the player has the option of typing verbs or choosing them from a menu. Thus, you have in front of you at all times a list of all the necessary verbs in the game. Features automapping.

Castle Elsinore

Author:Charles A. Crayne
Genre:Adaptation>Literary
Released:1983
License:Shareware
Review:

A treasure hunt set against, of all things, Hamlet. Not all that Shakespearean, really - the major characters from the play are present, but their function is limited to blocking doorways until you give them the right item. Knowledge of the play makes a few of the puzzles easier, but mostly it's just a treasure hunt set in and around a Danish castle. Frequent randomized combat and several mazes, although even in the mazes most connections between rooms are logical. Some fairly obscure puzzles and an extremely obscure riddle in the endgame. Lots of purely decorative rooms.

Unnkulian Underworld: The Unknown Unventure

Part of the Unnkulian series

Author:D. A. Leary
Publisher:Adventions
Genres:Fantasy>Cave crawl
Humor>Satire
Released:1990
Review:

The first episode in the satirical Unnkulian saga. Like Zork, it's set in a high fantasy environment peppered with anacronisms. You're a slave to Kuulest, a wise hermit who dies during the intro. This makes you free, but also charges you with the obligation of descending into the ancient caverns of the Valley King to set something or other right. All the recurring themes of the Unnkulian games are established here, from Duhdhism and the obligatory fried egg puzzle to the Acme Corporation and its vastly inferior products. Hunger is a factor, but not a seriously limiting one. Contains a maze. Contains a lot of old adventure cliches, for that matter, but mostly for the sake of mocking them. Has some very nice puzzles, the sort where the solution arrives in a blaze of inspiration while you're waiting for the bus or whatever.

Your fame for surviving the Unnkulian Underworld is beginning to wane, and you need a new adventure to drum up some publicity. Further details about your goal are kept secret until the very end. Good object-based puzzles, a nice feel to the outdoor section, lots of red herrings, a couple of deliberately incomplete direction lists and a small maze. Has more of a modern slant than its predecessor, in that the "dungeon" sections consist of Acme's secet underground research complex. Command parsing isn't as strong as it could be in TADS - I had to hunt a bit for the correct phrasing in a couple of places, but it's bearable. As in UU1, you get hungry, but there's loads of food scattered around. Some hints provided in the game by Robert Abernathy.

The Haunted Mission Adventure

Author:Steven Neighorn
Genre:Horror>Haunted House
Released:1987
License:Shareware
Review:

Rescue the Pumpkin Man from the clutches of the witch Lady Winsloe, doing in as many creatures of the night as you can along the way. Crude and simple, with lots of optional puzzles. Two-word parser, split window, a little guess-the-verb. Some text flashes and then disappears; you may need to slow your machine down to see it.

Island of Mystery Adventure

Review:

You're stranded on a desert island and have to escape with as many treasures as possible before the tsunami strikes (500 move limit). Two-word parser, rather complicated split-window scheme, straightforward puzzles. Old and small.

Zork

Alternate Titles:Dungeon
Authors:Tim Anderson, Marc Blank, Bruce Daniels, and Dave Lebling
Genres:Fantasy>Cave crawl
Fantasy>Zorkian
Released:1979
Review:

This is the forbear of the Zork trilogy, written at MIT before Infocom was formed. The first game to feature a full-sentence parser, albeit a crude one by today's standards. Very derivative of Adventure, from the maze of twisty little passages to the orange smoke that accompanies ressurrection. Basically, a treasure hunt in a cave. Two mazes (counting the coal mine), a little randomized combat, and a nonsense puzzle or two. Much historical interest, however. Nearly everything in this game can be found in the Zork trilogy, although some crucial details are different. Available in various stages of its development; unlike Adventure, which used a very rigid database, this game was designed to be easy to modify, and got modified a lot.

Deep Space Drifter

Authors:Steve McAdams and Michael J. Roberts
Genre:Science Fiction
Released:1988
License:Shareware
Review:

You are a deep space explorer in distress who docks on an abandoned space station seeking rescue. Structurally, DSD is split into two parts - the first one taking place in the station itself, and the second - on the planet the station is orbiting around. The first part has a nice (albeit non-exceptional by modern standards) setting with not-too-hard puzzles (I'd got the feeling they were intended as appetizers for the next part). The second section of the game effectively is a sketchily implemented bunch of puzzles; the puzzles themselves, however, are of top quality - very elaborate, logical, fun to solve, and immensely satisfying.

The development process for DSD has been described by Mike Roberts in his TADS manual, and I agree with him in that the entire game reflects its history. I'd especially recommend it to beginning IF-authors, since it shows pretty clearly that even a great authoring talent, and excellent programming skills won't help you if you don't plan your work thoroughly.

A Dudley Dilemma

Author:Lane Barrow
Genre:Collegiate
Released:1988
Review:

A game set at Harvard, with an engagingly cartoony sense of exaggeration. Contains a T. S. Eliot scene, two mazes, puzzles based on wordplay, puzzles based on trivia, and a few special-purpose verbs you'll have to figure out (like "borrow", a verb only applicable to books at a library.) Starts off linear, but broadens a lot once you're past a certain point. The goal is unclear until very near the end. The enhanced version contains background music and occasional photographic illustrations.
