Adventure

Alternate Titles:Abenteuer, ADVENT, Adventure in Humongous Cave, Aventura, Aventure, Avontuur, Colossal Adventure - Jewels of Darkness, Colossal Cave, nuntalyli'u, Original Adventure
Authors:William Crowther and Donald Woods
Genre:Fantasy>Cave crawl
Released:1976
Review:

The original. What more can be said? This was the first adventure game; the whole genre is named after it. Without it, Infocom would have been just another maker of business software, Sierra On-line would be primarily known for adaptations of coin-op videogames, and Volker Blasius would have a life. A detailed description of this game's history and significance can be found in Graham Nelson's "The Craft of Adventure".

Ignoring the profound historical significance for a moment, it's a treasure hunt in a cave, like most of the early adventures (including Zork). It has a verb-noun parser, minimal detail, two big annoying mazes, magic words, nonsense puzzles, and occasional death without warning. None of this matters. Download it anyway. You cannot consider yourself a true adventurer until you've played this game.

There are many different versions of this game, some of which include additions by later authors. The original gave a total of 350 points. Later additions usually award a higher final score.

Night of the Walking Dead

Author:John Olsen
Genre:Horror>Zombie
Released:1992
License:Shareware
Review:

You have to retrieve a locket from the morgue, but the dead try to stop you. Some tolerable puzzles for the simple technology used, but it settles into a tedious pattern of repeatedly getting knocked unconscious by a zombie and having to hunt for the crucial item it stole from you.

Lost in Space: Dr. Smith Goes Home

Alternate Titles:Tossed into Space: Dr. Schmidt Goes Home
Author:Graeme Cree
Genres:Science Fiction
Adaptation>Screen
Released:1993
Review:

A one-sitting game based on the 1960's TV series. You play Dr. Smith; your goal is to ditch the Robinsons and reach Earth on your own. Mr. Cree clearly knows his Lost In Space well: the descriptions are full of LIS minutiae, and additional files explain how the game was desinged both to provide the series with an ending and to explain some of its inconsistencies. Contains AGT-style monsters and a weapon with limited charges.

After its initial release, the author, possibly concerned about copyright infringement, decided to re-release it, with all the names changed, as Tossed into Space: Dr. Schmidt Goes Home. The Schmidt version lacks the original's theme song (played on the PC internal speaker) and some of the additional files, but does come with source code.

A Dudley Dilemma

Author:Lane Barrow
Genre:Collegiate
Released:1988
Review:

A game set at Harvard, with an engagingly cartoony sense of exaggeration. Contains a T. S. Eliot scene, two mazes, puzzles based on wordplay, puzzles based on trivia, and a few special-purpose verbs you'll have to figure out (like "borrow", a verb only applicable to books at a library.) Starts off linear, but broadens a lot once you're past a certain point. The goal is unclear until very near the end. The enhanced version contains background music and occasional photographic illustrations.

Enhanced

Authors:Hans Persson and Dominik Zemmler
Genre:Science Fiction
Released:1994
License:Shareware
Review:

This is the first episode of a cyberpunk trilogy in progress. In desperate need of cash, you volunteer for a scientific experiment. You are given special abilities - primarily, the ability to link your mind with electronic devices by touching their I/O leads. Your goal is to use your new abilities to escape the laboratory before the researchers can find your new limits of survivability. The enhancements are a good conceit, and well-implemented: you really have to think in terms of them in order to win. The chief flaw of this game is that you will frequently find it necessary to go back to an earlier save because of things that you didn't know would be necessary. There is also a time limit and a few time-sensitive puzzles.

Released:1989
Review:

A parody of Zork 2: The Wizard of Frobozz, with an urban setting and a tapdancing chicken organ as the villain. Smaller, easier, sillier, and less biting than Pork 1. Entirely based on scenes from Zork 2 - thus, only of interest to people familiar with that game, and even to them, only as a mild amusement. Contains a LGOP-style "Lewd mode" which only affects one scene. The copy of the AGT runtime included seems to have the same problems with saved games as .

The Star Portal

Author:Michael Detlefsen
Genre:Science Fiction>Space Exploration
Released:1988
Review:

The portal in the name is a booth capable of teleporting you at random to various other booths like it throughout the galaxy. Thus, an exploration of various planets (eight in all). Atmospheric in some places, funny in others. It is possible to win without visiting a planet twice, but only if you know what you're doing. The author shows some disdain for mazes, but still includes outdoor mazelike areas. Suffers badly from early AGT parsing - many objects can only be referred to with the right verb, and some verbs are unintuitive (for example, the only way to use a swiss army knife is to "open" the appropriate tool.) A few time limits, a smattering of death, two GAGS monsters, and one riddle. One of the few games with convincing cave scenes.

Susan, a Lustful Game

Author:Bill Larkins
Genre:Pornographic
Released:1988
Review:

A minimally erotic game - basically, Susan won't make love until you complete a series of errands. Definitely lightweight. The only significant obstacle is a maze.

Tark Simmons, Priestess of the First Church, in her battle against the Demon of Dark Desire

Author:W. P. Kegelmeyer
Genre:Fantasy
Released:1988
Review:

Tark is a D&D cleric, summoned to the Astral Plane to confront a demon who imprisons artists' souls for some dark end. I hope this game once came with more docs than it has now - there's a crucial undocumented special verb ("away", to banish undead), and the player must answer riddles requiring more knowledge of Tark's world than be found in the game. At least the spellcasting commands are documented. There's a system of hit points, spell points, and alignment points, any of which you can choose to conserve at the expense of the others - it's an interesting attempt at a good general framework for a game, but largely fails through bad parsing. Contains monsters that only D&D players will recognize. See The Battle of Philip against the Forces of Creation for a better game involving Tark.

Mindshadow

Author:Bill Heineman
Publisher:Interplay
Genre:Mystery
Released:1984
License:Former commercial
Review:

Loosely inspired by The Bourne Identity, this is an early (possibly the earliest) example of the now-cliché device of amnesia as a way to plausibly throw the player character into an unknown environment. After your return to civilization from the desert island where you begin, the goal turns from mere survival to a search (whilst dodging assassins) for the protagonist's missing past, revealed piecemeal through the special command "REMEMBER". Once you've remembered everything, the game ends abruptly. Rather short and reasonably easy, largely due to the simplicity of the world model. The cartoonish illustrations contain vital information not mentioned in the text.

Save Princeton

Authors:Karine Schaefer and Jacob Weinstein
Genre:Collegiate
Released:1991
License:Shareware
Review:

Princeton University has been suddenly and inexplicably taken over by an invading army, and you're the only one who will bother to save the day. One of the better collegiate games - the puzzles are solid and the inevitable in-jokes are relatively unobtrusive. Lots of self-reference, some red herrings, and a sort of anti-maze. The TADS module contains a few Macintosh-specific characters that won't print correctly on other systems.

Frankenstein's Legacy

Alternate Titles:Frankenstein Adventure

Genre:Horror
Released:1992

Review:

You've inherited Castle Frankenstein. Complete his work, then escape from it. I remember a version of this game in TRS-80 BASIC from years and years ago. One of Olsen's better games, but rather primitive for all that.

The Sea Phantom

Released:1992

Review:

You seek a legendary pirate's treasure, but before you can find it, you have to lay the pirate's ghost to rest by following concealed instructions. Although minimalist and technically simple, this is probably Olsen's most difficult adventure.
