Space Aliens Laughed at my Cardigan
| Author: | Andre M. Boyle | | Genres: | Science Fiction>Alien Visitation
Humor>Satire | | Released: | 1992 | | License: | Shareware | | Review: | This game seems like something a bored twelve-year-old wrote in the span
of an hour without going back to change anything he had written. It
exudes a consistent awfulness that earns it the lowest degree of honor
available in this guide. It violates every known principle of game
design, with arbitrary deaths and arbitrary puzzles, but that's not all:
this game was apparently never debugged. Half the commands simply do not
work. The faulty mechanics are complemented by hideous spelling (it took
me hours to realize what a "sionide pill" is) and a sense of humor about as
sharp as a bale of cotton. The plot: The aliens didn't just laugh at your
cardigan, they destroyed it. You have to get a replacement before Mom finds
out. I really suggest that you try this game, if only to see how vile a
game can be.

Dinkum
| Author: | Gary A. Allen | | Genres: | Fantasy>Cave crawl
Travel | | Released: | 1993 | | Review: | A treasure hunt set in the Australian outback, mostly in an abandoned gold
mine. Contains puzzles, but you'll spend most of your time running from
randomly-distributed monsters through undistinguished tunnels. Treasures
and junk are also randomly distributed. There's no real "save game" feature.
Invoking the game with a special flag gives you a "data recorder" with which
you can store sequences of moves to a file, but the random aspects limit the
utility of this item. Also, using it at all locks you out of the endgame.
Apparently, the author wants you to play the whole thing in one sitting.
(Why?)

Heather's Easter Egg Hunt
Special Agent
Reruns Again
| Author: | Neil Sorenson | | Genres: | Humor>Satire
Adaptation>Screen | | Released: | 1992 | | Review: | Escape from television! Only by interacting with the characters and
environs of four TV shows (parodies of Gilligan's Island,
The Brady Bunch, Star Trek, and LA Law)
can you avoid being doomed to life in reruns. A clever game in conception,
but I can't help but feel that it didn't do enough with the material.
(For example, most of the Bradys do nothing but stand around being
Bradys, without so much as a joke to justify their presence.)
Also marred by numerous run-on sentences.
Unlike most AGT games, this does not have a copy of RUN.EXE (the AGT
interpreter for MS-DOS) packaged with it. A copy from most other AGT
games will do.

Toonesia
| Author: | Jacob Weinstein | | Genres: | Adaptation>Cartoon
Adaptation>Screen
Children's | | Released: | 1995 | | Review: | A small game based on old Warner Brothers cartoons. You play "Elmo Fuld" in
pursuit of a certain rascally rabbit. Game structure provides an illusion
of freedom, even though the puzzles can only be solved in linear sequence.
Features cartoon physics (ie, you can walk off a cliff and hang in the air
unsupported for a while.) Doesn't really capture the feel of the cartoons,
but that's a given for any text-based medium.

All Quiet on the Library Front
Tube Trouble
| Author: | Richard Tucker | | Genre: | Slice of life | | Released: | 1988 | | Review: | A tiny game set in a tube station (what Americans call a subway).
Your goal is to get something to eat.
Interestingly, most changes in game state are only indirectly reversible.
There isn't much you can do in this game, and what can be done must be
done. You'll either solve this one pretty quickly or become frustrated
and then bored with it.

A Journey into Xanth
| Author: | Neil Sorenson | | Genres: | Fantasy
Adaptation>Literary | | Released: | 1992 | | Review: | An original story set in the magic land created by novelist
Piers Anthony. Rather heavy on the noninteractive exposition and
surprisingly light on the pun content - Mr. Sorensen seems more
fascinated by the "magical talents" aspect of Xanth, and makes them
central to the plot. Follows the proven Xanth format of a perilous
journey (in this case, a jaunt across the Gap to Castle Roogna), at
the end of which things are solved without much effort. Game
mechanics suffer from typical early-AGT flaws - most special cases
only work properly in the one situation where they have to. Food is a
factor. Requires learning by death. Probably largely more accurate
than Legend's Companions of Xanth, but less enjoyable for
a non-fan like myself. I'll give it this much: It's a lot shorter than
the novels.

Waystation
Andkara: Baby, the Rain Must Fall
Betty Carlson's Big Date
Theatre
| Author: | Brendon Wyber | | Genre: | Horror | | Released: | 1995 | | Review: | A genuinely creepy game. Spend the night trapped in an abandoned theatre,
accompanied by a variety of spooks and nameless horrors. Has an interesting
two-layered plot: as the game progresses, the building's history is revealed
by the pages of an old journal you find scattered about. Lots of hidden
passages, solid (but not unduly hard) puzzles, and an adaptive hint system.
Inspired by the short story The Ghosts of the Lyric, the entire
text of which is available in the game via the help menu.

The Detective
Fast Lane
So I Mangled My Mom
| Author: | Aaron Oldenburg | | Genre: | Surreal | | Released: | 1995 | | Review: | A weird and primitive game about catching dwarves in the hopes of restoring your mangled mom. Based on a dream the author had, and makes about as much sense as dreams usually do. Contains elements of sex and violence. Very small command set, inadequate recognition of synonyms, no save game feature, built-in walkthrough that you'll probably need to consult multiple times. Uses location names instead of compass points for travel. By all means give it a try if you're into weird, but don't get your hopes too high.

The Misadventure of the Holy Grail
| Author: | Michael Detlefsen | | Genres: | Adaptation>Screen
Fantasy>Arthurian
Humor>Satire | | Released: | 1989 | | Review: | A loose adaptation of an Eamon module based on a Monty Python film
based on Arthurian legend. Extremely silly in a way
that falls flat more often than not. (Imagine taking old Monty Python
routines and changing all the details in ways that make them less funny...)
The only thing that saves this game is a couple of good, not-too-difficult
puzzle sequences. Contains randomized combat (albeit not as much as the
Eamon module on which it's based).

Escape from the ELI
The House of O's
Adventure
| Alternate Titles: | Abenteuer, ADVENT, Adventure in Humongous Cave, Aventura, Aventure, Avontuur, Colossal Adventure - Jewels of Darkness, Colossal Cave, nuntalyli'u, Original Adventure
| | Authors: | William Crowther and Donald Woods | | Genre: | Fantasy>Cave crawl | | Released: | 1976 | | Review: | The original. What more can be said? This was the first adventure game; the whole genre is named after it. Without it, Infocom would have been just another maker of business software, Sierra On-line would be primarily known for adaptations of coin-op videogames, and Volker Blasius would have a life. A detailed description of this game's history and significance can be found in Graham Nelson's "The Craft of Adventure".
Ignoring the profound historical significance for a moment, it's a treasure hunt in a cave, like most of the early adventures (including Zork). It has a verb-noun parser, minimal detail, two big annoying mazes, magic words, nonsense puzzles, and occasional death without warning. None
of this matters. Download it anyway. You cannot consider yourself a true adventurer until you've played this game.
There are many different versions of this game, some of which include
additions by later authors. The original gave a total of 350 points.
Later additions usually award a higher final score.

Pork 1: The Great Underground Sewer System
| Author: | Anonymous | | Genres: | Fantasy>Cave crawl
Fantasy>Zorkian
Humor>Satire | | Released: | 1988 | | Review: | A parody of the classic Zork, consisting mostly of goofy
situations based on the original, and extensive commentary on the the
inadequacy of adventure games from the late 70's and early 80's. Gameplay
follows that of the generation of games it's based on: nonlinear treasure
hunts with lots of opportunities to die or otherwise lock yourself out of
victory. As satire, it doesn't work as well as
the Unnkulian games, but it's about on the level of
Mad Magazine. Contains some randomized combat and one obscure
and motivationless puzzle.

Pyramid
Love's Fiery Imbroglio
| Alternate Titles: | Love's Fiery Rapture
| | Author: | Natasha Mirage | | Genres: | Romance
Slice of life | | Released: | 1988 | | Review: | The story of a blind date with the man of your dreams. (The protagonist is
female.) I've seen this in lists of adventure games more than once, despite
the fact that it's not an adventure game. It's just an insubstantial bit of
hyperfiction that doesn't branch very much - most choices either end the
story immediately or rejoin the main narrative after a page or two. Still,
it's not as bad as most hyperfiction that tries to pass itself off as
adventure.

Der Ring des Nibelungen
| Author: | Michael R. Harris | | Genre: | Humor>Satire | | Released: | 1988 | | Review: | The dreams of a man who falls asleep during a performance of Wagner's
Siegfried. Somewhat amusing. Requires guesswork, and
degenrates towards the end into a linear series of one-way passages
in which you must already have the necessary item to proceed.
Knowledge of the opera helps.

Tamoret
| Author: | Michael J. Lyons | | Genres: | Horror
Horror>Vampire
Horror>Zombie | | Released: | 1988 | | License: | Shareware | | Review: | A being from the fourth dimension has invaded the peaceful little town
of Tamoret, and let loose a plague of zombies, werewolves and the like.
A lengthy game for its era, with a day/night cycle and several
distinct sections leading up to a climax in a stylized hyperspace.
Has a few nice tough puzzles that take advantage of the few things that
AGT circa 1988 handles well (such as characters that follow you). Also
has bugs, illogical puzzles, very obscure riddles, some nonstandard
syntax ("go to [item]" is required in several places), several mazelike
areas, and a truly annoying scene where a vampire pops up and must be
re-subdued every couple of turns. Could have been a nice game.
The copy of the AGT runtime provided in the zip file seems to have a
problem with saved games - when restoring, you have to specify the
full filename ("foo.$av" rather than just "foo").

Ghost Town
| Author: | E. L. Cheney | | Genre: | Western | | Released: | 1985 | | Review: | Despite the title, the town of Brimstone is definitely inhabited, chiefly
by a wicked Sheriff and his captive damsel. You get to rescue her, while
pocketing valuables. Lots of padding, GAGS monsters, occasional bad
spelling, no puzzles of note, and a sick prurience surrounding the
damsel's abuse. Given its flaws, it's a surprisingly cohesive world, with
a past revealed by tangible evidence rather than exposition.

Dragonslayer
Jigsaw
| Author: | Graham Nelson | | Genres: | Science Fiction>Time Travel
Historical
Romance | | Released: | 1995 | | Review: | A whirlwind tour of the 20th century. Hunt for the jigsaw pieces that allow
you to travel trough time, following a charming stranger who wants to
"improve" history. Huge, difficult, exceptionally well-crafted. Lots of
detailed research went into this game. The environment is highly
interactive, with some extremely detailed gadgets (such as Alan Turing's
Enigma machine.) Surprisingly enough, Mr. Nelson also found time to include
some romance - and the love interest is that charming stranger whose plans
you're foiling. The game is divided into partially-ordered chapters, which
are mostly, but not entirely, self-contained. Trinity's
influence is obvious in the layout: a central strange and fantastic land,
from which you can temporarily escape to the past. Three warnings: Some of
the puzzles are very difficult indeed (one requires elementary knowledge of
Proust!), many of the chapters have time limits, and it is possible to lock
yourself out of victory without realizing it. (For that last point: The
Kaldecki Detector found on the Titanic helps a lot.) Has a crucial
dependence on character graphics.
