Adventure
| Alternate Titles: | Abenteuer, ADVENT, Adventure in Humongous Cave, Aventura, Aventure, Avontuur, Colossal Adventure - Jewels of Darkness, Colossal Cave, nuntalyli'u, Original Adventure
| | Authors: | William Crowther and Donald Woods | | Genre: | Fantasy>Cave crawl | | Released: | 1976 | | Review: | The original. What more can be said? This was the first adventure game; the whole genre is named after it. Without it, Infocom would have been just another maker of business software, Sierra On-line would be primarily known for adaptations of coin-op videogames, and Volker Blasius would have a life. A detailed description of this game's history and significance can be found in Graham Nelson's "The Craft of Adventure".
Ignoring the profound historical significance for a moment, it's a treasure hunt in a cave, like most of the early adventures (including Zork). It has a verb-noun parser, minimal detail, two big annoying mazes, magic words, nonsense puzzles, and occasional death without warning. None
of this matters. Download it anyway. You cannot consider yourself a true adventurer until you've played this game.
There are many different versions of this game, some of which include
additions by later authors. The original gave a total of 350 points.
Later additions usually award a higher final score.

Zork
| Alternate Titles: | Dungeon
| | Authors: | Tim Anderson, Marc Blank, Bruce Daniels, and Dave Lebling | | Genres: | Fantasy>Cave crawl
Fantasy>Zorkian | | Released: | 1979 | | Review: | This is the forbear of the Zork trilogy, written at MIT before Infocom was formed. The first game to feature a full-sentence parser, albeit a crude one by today's standards. Very derivative of Adventure, from the maze of twisty little passages to the orange smoke that accompanies ressurrection. Basically, a treasure hunt in a cave. Two mazes (counting the coal mine), a little randomized combat, and a nonsense puzzle or two. Much historical interest, however. Nearly everything in this game can be found in the Zork trilogy, although some crucial details are different. Available in various stages of its development; unlike Adventure, which used a very rigid database, this game
was designed to be easy to modify, and got modified a lot.

Z-Life
| Author: | Julian Arnold | | Genre: | Abuses | | Released: | 1996 | | Review: | Another Z-Abuse, this one weirder than most. It's billed as an "implementation of Conway's Game of Life," and it essentially consists of a lot of ASCII characters moving around uncontrolled by you. If you're in on that particular joke, by all means check this out.

The Quest for Marron
I Didn't Know You Could Yodel
| Authors: | Michael Eisenman and Andrew J. Indovina | | Genre: | Humor | | Released: | 1998 | | Review: | Childish in the extreme, offensive now and again, and just plain irritating most of the time. Packed with bathroom and sex humor (well, "humor" is generous), and generally pitched at 10-year-olds, except that I wouldn't let any 10-year-old I know see it. The puzzles, for their part, turn on jokes or riddles that completely escaped me. The only thing saving this from one-star-land is that the programming is actually pretty good--the parser is built from scratch, and the authors do things like inset windows quite competently. Unfortunately, the competent programming just makes it less likely that you'll be distracted from the game itself, which is thoroughly repulsive.
