Adventure
| Alternate Titles: | Abenteuer, ADVENT, Adventure in Humongous Cave, Aventura, Aventure, Avontuur, Colossal Adventure - Jewels of Darkness, Colossal Cave, nuntalyli'u, Original Adventure
| | Authors: | William Crowther and Donald Woods | | Genre: | Fantasy>Cave crawl | | Released: | 1976 | | Review: | The original. What more can be said? This was the first adventure game; the whole genre is named after it. Without it, Infocom would have been just another maker of business software, Sierra On-line would be primarily known for adaptations of coin-op videogames, and Volker Blasius would have a life. A detailed description of this game's history and significance can be found in Graham Nelson's "The Craft of Adventure".
Ignoring the profound historical significance for a moment, it's a treasure hunt in a cave, like most of the early adventures (including Zork). It has a verb-noun parser, minimal detail, two big annoying mazes, magic words, nonsense puzzles, and occasional death without warning. None
of this matters. Download it anyway. You cannot consider yourself a true adventurer until you've played this game.
There are many different versions of this game, some of which include
additions by later authors. The original gave a total of 350 points.
Later additions usually award a higher final score.

BSE
| Author: | Chris Smith | | Genres: | Espionage
Horror | | Released: | 1996 | | Review: | There's a new strain of mad cow disease in the village of Skebdale,
possibly connected to rumors of satanic rites. You play "some sort of
secret agent/vet/health inspector", following a trail of clues to
track it to its source. Small, humorous, some good puzzles, a few
non-fatal bugs, and a maze. Doesn't really have much of anything to
do with mad cow disease.

Christminster
| Author: | Gareth Rees | | Genres: | Collegiate
Mystery | | Released: | 1995 | | Review: | A social visit to Biblioll College, Christminster turns to an exploration of
alchemical secrets and centuries-old conspiracies when you discover that your
brother is missing. A well-developed environment with vivid characters and
some quite suspenseful moments. Although not billed as a mystery - and
although whodunnit is pretty obvious - much of what the player does in this
game is very detective-like. The whole game is very closely tied together;
once you've gotten past the front gate, neither the plot nor the map is
easily divided into segments. A nice mix of puzzles, including several
optional ones. Some puzzles appear to be time-based, but closer scrutiny
reveals that time only advances in response to plot events triggered by
solving puzzles, so that's nothing to worry about (although there are a few
small, local time limits.) One of the few games with a female protagonist.
Has a built-in hint system that dispenses hints, not solutions.
One item, a map, uses characer graphics, but this can be ignored.

Cosmoserve
| Author: | Judith Pintar | | Genres: | Science Fiction
Humor>Satire | | Released: | 1991 | | Review: | A dead-on satire of BBS culture, with a small built-in BBS simulation.
You're a computer programmer (and plumber), and must get your code working
by morning, a task that turns out to involve playing games in virtual reality
in order to track down the source of a sinister virus. In the meantime, there are
message boards and conferences to explore, a surprising proportion of which
turn out to be relevant to the game. Numerous time-sensitive puzzles,
internal speaker sound effects, and an endgame that quizzes you on a few
details of the game - you will definitely not win this game on one pass.
Save frequently and use the built-in hint system.

Delusions
| Author: | C. E. Forman | | Genre: | Science Fiction | | Released: | 1996 | | Review: | Head games galore in this one. You're working in a Virtual Reality
lab, helping to debug the next generation of sim technology, until a
suave stranger forces you to confront the creeping air of
inconsistency that's been in the corner of your consciousness.
A dark one, with surprises up to the end, one of the coolest villains
I've seen in a long time, and some quite impressive feats of Inform
programming. The structure is unusual, with a nightmarishly looping
midgame that resembles its frame in form but not in content. The
puzzles are all clever, although a bit obscure towards the end. Has a
built-in hint menu.

Shades of Gray
| Authors: | Mark Baker, Steve Bauman, Belisana, Hercules, Mike Laskey, Judith Pintar, and Cindy Yans | | Genres: | Surreal
Historical | | Released: | 1992 | | Review: | WARNING: High Tarot content.
An imaginative psychodrama of self-confrontation and moral dilemma, by way of
Haiti, Sherwood Forest, and an American Civil War battlefield. One of the
most intriguing storylines I've seen in any game. You wander the city
streets, or possibly the castle grounds, with a sense of temporal dislocation
and confused memories of vampires, until a friendly fortune-teller helps you
put your head back together through a series of visions about your past and
what it means to you. Written by seven strangers, the game is divided into
self-contained segments of highly variable style, subject matter, and quality.
This is at once the game's greatest strength and its greatest weakness. Just
about everything you hate in games can be found here - mazes, time limits,
obscure "guess-the-word" puzzles - but the flawed parts fit into the
frame-tale so well, the effect is dazzling. Given a better parser and the
removal of some of the more annoying puzzles, this one would easily rate five
stars.

I Didn't Know You Could Yodel
| Authors: | Michael Eisenman and Andrew J. Indovina | | Genre: | Humor | | Released: | 1998 | | Review: | Childish in the extreme, offensive now and again, and just plain irritating most of the time. Packed with bathroom and sex humor (well, "humor" is generous), and generally pitched at 10-year-olds, except that I wouldn't let any 10-year-old I know see it. The puzzles, for their part, turn on jokes or riddles that completely escaped me. The only thing saving this from one-star-land is that the programming is actually pretty good--the parser is built from scratch, and the authors do things like inset windows quite competently. Unfortunately, the competent programming just makes it less likely that you'll be distracted from the game itself, which is thoroughly repulsive.

Magic Realms -- The Sword of Kasza
Mystery Science Theater 3000 Presents "Detective"
| Author: | C. E. Forman | | Porter: | Graeme Cree | | Post-release Contributor: | Stuart Moore | | Genres: | Mystery
Humor>Satire | | Released: | 1995 | | Review: | For those unfamiliar with the television program, Mystery Science
Theater 3000 consists of bad sci-fi movies with humorous heckling
added. This game changes the medium, but keeps the spirit. Matt Barringer's Detective
is mercilessly lambasted in imitation
of the show's silly and irreverent style. If you've never seen the show, you
might not get much out of it; if you've neither seen the show nor played
Detective, you'll probably want to give this one a miss, although
the use of multiple narrative voices (the original game and the commentary) is
interesting once you notice it.

Voyage to Atlantis
| Alternate Titles: | Trip to Atlantis
| | Author: | Greg Hassett | | Genre: | Fantasy>Cave crawl | | Review: | A simple underwater treasure hunt with hostile marine fauna, very much in the
Scott Adams style. Two-word parser, minimal descriptions, only one save slot.
Good clean fun if you like that sort of thing. Has a small maze and the
annoying limitation that treasures cannot be picked up after you've
stashed them in your submarine. (Several treasures are tools.)

Slice of life | | Released: | 1996 | | Review: | Your friend Malcolm disappears just before his wedding, and you suspect
foul play. It's up to you to make sure everything goes as planned, while
coping with the bride's uncooperative nouveau riche family. Takes
place in a manor house with lots of useless scenery. Humorous, very
character-oriented, has a few neat code tricks. Contains adaptive hints.

Frobozz Magic Support
| Author: | Nate Cull | | Genre: | Fantasy>Zorkian | | Released: | 1996 | | Review: | A delightful addition to the Zork universe. The entire
Frobozz Magic Company tech support staff has disappeared,
except for you. While you figure out what happened and how
to undo it, you have four service calls to handle in small
Zorkian environments. There's a glossary of Zork terms
contained in the game, but prior knowledge of the world (and
the Enchanter trilogy in particular) is
recommended.
