The Mad Bomber
| Author: | Neil James Brown | | Genre: | Abuses>Non-IF game | | Released: | 1997 | | Review: | Another Inform videogame. This one's a relative of Canyon Bomber,
except that the bombs don't have any horizontal momentum, which makes it kind of easy.

Night of the Vampire Bunnies
| Author: | Jason Dyer | | Genre: | Horror>Vampire | | Review: | A nothing-special attempt at humor by a 10-year-old, set in a
graveyard. The parser is an inconsistent blend of general two-word
commands and special full-sentence syntaces. Contains a small,
innocuous maze. The original BASIC version has no save game feature.

The Horror of Rylvania
| Author: | D. A. Leary | | Publisher: | Adventions | | Genre: | Horror>Vampire | | Released: | 1993 | | License: | Former shareware | | Review: | A nice vampire game. Very much based on object puzzles and hunting for potion ingredients, but there's some good interactive storytelling underlying it. Full of clichés, but it delivers them with considerable gusto.
I hope I'm not giving away too much here, but it's hard to write a review without mentioning the first of the game's big plot twists: fairly early on, the player character is turned into a vampire. It doesn't really carry the this far enough, though. Your special powers are few and unsatisfying, you only seem to have superhuman strength when the plot calls for it, and you can be killed surprisingly easily for one of the undead. But it does provide the basis for a modal environment, with some locations that you can only visit as a human and others that you can only visit as a vampire.
Two mazes, scattered violence, easy to lock yourself out of victory, expects you to dig in places just because you can. The "help" command gives gentle guidance through the early stages of the game.

| | Review: | Creepy, satisfyingly scary. You're on a hiking trip in Central Europe, and your companion gets killed by werewolves--and you're next on the menu. There are lots of gratuitous puzzles, and some of them aren't very interesting--but a few are pretty creative, and the plot is unusually well done for a puzzle-oriented game. Has an interesting twist at the end--it's an early prototype of what's come to be known as the Zarfian ending. Very gory in parts. Originally released as shareware, but when a project to release all the Adventions games on a CD failed, this and all the rest were made available for free.

Unnkulian Underworld: The Unknown Unventure
Part of the Unnkulian series
| Author: | D. A. Leary | | Publisher: | Adventions | | Genres: | Fantasy>Cave crawl
Humor>Satire | | Released: | 1990 | | Review: | The first episode in the satirical Unnkulian saga. Like Zork,
it's set in a high fantasy environment peppered with anacronisms. You're a
slave to Kuulest, a wise hermit who dies during the intro. This makes you
free, but also charges you with the obligation of descending into the ancient
caverns of the Valley King to set something or other right. All the
recurring themes of the Unnkulian games are established here, from Duhdhism
and the obligatory fried egg puzzle to the Acme Corporation and its
vastly inferior products. Hunger is a factor, but not a seriously limiting
one. Contains a maze. Contains a lot of old adventure cliches, for that
matter, but mostly for the sake of mocking them. Has some very nice puzzles,
the sort where the solution arrives in a blaze of inspiration while you're
waiting for the bus or whatever.

Unnkulian Unventure II: The Secret of Acme
Part of the Unnkulian series
| Author: | David Baggett | | Publisher: | Adventions | | Genres: | Fantasy
Humor>Satire | | Released: | 1991 | | Review: | This game follows the further exploits of the slave-turned-adventurer from
Unnkulia 1. Your fame for surviving the
Unnkulian Underworld is beginning to wane, and you need a new adventure to
drum up some publicity. Further details about your goal are kept secret
until the very end. Good object-based puzzles, a nice feel to the outdoor
section, lots of red herrings, a couple of deliberately incomplete direction
lists and a small maze. Has more of a modern slant than its predecessor, in
that the "dungeon" sections consist of Acme's secet underground research
complex. Command parsing isn't as strong as it could be in TADS - I had to
hunt a bit for the correct phrasing in a couple of places, but it's bearable.
As in UU1, you get hungry, but there's loads of food scattered around. Some
hints provided in the game by Robert Abernathy.

Humor>Satire | | Released: | 1993 | | License: | Former shareware | | Review: | Although this is the third game in the Unnkulian series, it's set before
the others. As a brave but acrophobic warrior loyal to the Valley King,
you must rescue his beloved Amanda from her abductors, the dread demons of
Unnkul. In the process, you learn much about the history of the valley,
and gain your first glimpses of its future. Fairly difficult, with
several major sticking points and opportunities to leave behind important
items (which are often the ones that seem the most unimportant). Packed
with references to the other Unnkulia games, including many items and
rooms that are otherwise mere red herrings. Hunger is a factor.

The Legend Lives!
Part of the Unnkulian series
| Author: | David Baggett | | Publisher: | Adventions | | Genres: | Science Fiction
Fantasy
Religious | | Released: | 1994 | | Review: | Set in the same world as the Unnkulian series, but centuries later, in a
world with computer networks, space travel, and the Akmi Corporation as
the galaxy's major power. The protagonist is a graduate student who stumbles
across a terrible secret: a computer virus that's taking over the net, and
with it the world. Could this be the revenge of the ancient and forgotten
Unnkulians? A richly detailed game, with lots of interactive gadgets to play
with, but also an ambitious work of art, with some quite lyrical prose and an
interesting combination of the silly and the serious. One major experiment
is the use of lengthy sections of non-interactive text at key points in the
plot, sort of like the cut-scenes and cartoons found in graphic adventures.
Opinions about this vary. Adaptive hint system built into the game. Slow
on some systems. Knowledge of the Unnkulian saga helps in understanding
events; consider playing them first.

Adventure
| Alternate Titles: | Abenteuer, ADVENT, Adventure in Humongous Cave, Aventura, Aventure, Avontuur, Colossal Adventure - Jewels of Darkness, Colossal Cave, nuntalyli'u, Original Adventure
| | Authors: | William Crowther and Donald Woods | | Genre: | Fantasy>Cave crawl | | Released: | 1976 | | Review: | The original. What more can be said? This was the first adventure game; the whole genre is named after it. Without it, Infocom would have been just another maker of business software, Sierra On-line would be primarily known for adaptations of coin-op videogames, and Volker Blasius would have a life. A detailed description of this game's history and significance can be found in Graham Nelson's "The Craft of Adventure".
Ignoring the profound historical significance for a moment, it's a treasure hunt in a cave, like most of the early adventures (including Zork). It has a verb-noun parser, minimal detail, two big annoying mazes, magic words, nonsense puzzles, and occasional death without warning. None
of this matters. Download it anyway. You cannot consider yourself a true adventurer until you've played this game.
There are many different versions of this game, some of which include
additions by later authors. The original gave a total of 350 points.
Later additions usually award a higher final score.

Transylvania
| Author: | Antonio Antiochia | | Genres: | Horror>Vampire
Fantasy | | Released: | 1981 | | License: | Former commercial | | Review: | A mixture of traditional horror and fantasy motifs, with a flying
saucer thrown in for good measure.
The princess Sabrina lies ensorcelled in a vampire's castle, and will
die at dawn unless you can rescue her. Features graphics that get
stroked in as you watch, and which were considered quite good in their
day. Fairly small, two-word parser, easy puzzles, monsters that
wander around at random, and a time limit on the whole game.
The original documentation is unavailable, but the off-disk copy
protection is contained in the file trans.clue. There are at least
two versions of this game, with some slight differences in the puzzles.

Spadventure
| Author: | Patrick Walton | | Genre: | Fantasy>Cave crawl | | Released: | 1996 | | Review: | This is one implementation of Adventure that deserves its own listing. Mr. Walton has taken the spellcasting
code from Balances
and grafted it onto Colossal Cave, with amusing results. Much easier
than the original - who needs keys when you have Rezrov, or a lamp when you
have Frotz? Only two things are less convenient: teleportation words like
"xyzzy" are one-way, and the bear won't follow you (which means you actually
need magic to win).

Adventureland
Part of Scott Adams Classic Adventures
| Author: | Scott Adams | | Publisher: | Adventure International | | Genre: | Fantasy>Cave crawl | | Released: | 1978 | | License: | Former commercial | | Review: | A game of historical significance: originally written in TRS-80 BASIC, this was the first adventure game to be widely available on microcomputers. It's a minimalist treasure hunt set in and around a cave - an imitation of Colossal Cave, only without the prose. Good sense of freedom, somewhat eccentric design, two-word parser (except the Inform port), magic words, a maze, and a limited light source.

The Count
Part of Scott Adams Classic Adventures
| Author: | Scott Adams | | Publisher: | Adventure International | | Genre: | Horror>Vampire | | Released: | 1981 | | License: | Former commercial | | Review: | One of the better Scott Adams efforts. Count Dracula is stalking you, and you need to fend him off while you're assembling the requisite tools to defeat him. Requires long-range planning in a way that almost guarantees you'll have to replay, but it's a minor sin since the game is relatively short (and it also makes the game feel more complex and involved). One of the most interesting features is that the game is spread over three nights (and you need to avoid getting attacked when you fall asleep the first two nights); your dreams, though they flash by too quickly for you to really see, point to something significant that you discover later in the game. Most of the vampire cliches surface at one point or another, but Adams has fun with some of them as well, and generally it's pretty good considering the limited medium. Two-word parser.
