Adventure

Alternate Titles:Abenteuer, ADVENT, Adventure in Humongous Cave, Aventura, Aventure, Avontuur, Colossal Adventure - Jewels of Darkness, Colossal Cave, nuntalyli'u, Original Adventure
Authors:William Crowther and Donald Woods
Genre:Fantasy>Cave crawl
Released:1976
Review:

The original. What more can be said? This was the first adventure game; the whole genre is named after it. Without it, Infocom would have been just another maker of business software, Sierra On-line would be primarily known for adaptations of coin-op videogames, and Volker Blasius would have a life. A detailed description of this game's history and significance can be found in Graham Nelson's "The Craft of Adventure".

Ignoring the profound historical significance for a moment, it's a treasure hunt in a cave, like most of the early adventures (including Zork). It has a verb-noun parser, minimal detail, two big annoying mazes, magic words, nonsense puzzles, and occasional death without warning. None of this matters. Download it anyway. You cannot consider yourself a true adventurer until you've played this game.

There are many different versions of this game, some of which include additions by later authors. The original gave a total of 350 points. Later additions usually award a higher final score.

Reverberations

Author:Russell Glasser
Genres:Humor
Mystery
Released:1996
Review:

A silly little crimefighting spree with a certain amount of attitude. You play a Southern Californian pizza delivery boy turned mob informer, trying to impress a cute young District Attorney while dodging assassins. Small map, plot that steadily escalates in scale, built-in hints, and a built-in California-English dictionary (accessible via the "define" command). Contains many scenes where hesitation results in death.

Encyclopedia Frobozzica

Author:Nino Ruffini
Porter:Digby McWiggle
Genre:Fantasy>Zorkian
Review:

This is not an adventure or even IF, but is an adaptation of the Encyclopedia Frobozzica to Inform's online hint system. It is not the Encyclopedia from Sorcerer and Zork Zero; in fact, it contains fatal spoilers for both games, and for all of the other Zork games, and as such should be avoided by anyone who has not finished the entire series.

Most of the encyclopedia entries are rather perfunctory, lacking the humor of the earlier versions, but the Encyclopedia is definitely indispensible to anyone writing a Zorkian game.

Apartment F209

Author:Ben Parrish
Genre:Slice of life
Released:1997
Review:

You're a normal person in a normal apartment. Your goal is to go somewhere else. An extremely small game that the author admits was written as an exercise. No real puzzles, sparse prose, and some major differentiation problems. Eminently skippable unless you collect "explore the author's house" games.

El Poder de la Kínbreton

Alternate Titles:Eudoxio
Author:Daniel Cárdenas
Genre:Fantasy
Released:1996
Review:

English review:

Eudoxio is the first part of a mitic saga in the Spanish adventure. A vaporware saga because the second part has not been release after ten years. But as is, is one of the best spanish adventures of all times, that tells a plain medieval fantasy story with Tolkien points but with its own fantasy world, unpretentious, just the power of enjoy from start to end. El Poder de la Kínbreton is well developed joy upon a own parser of Daniel Cárdenas. It has converted in a paradigm of how to build a generic fantasy adventure of great quality, instead with its bugs and one unfair puzzle now memorable. Although Eudoxio 1 is the first part of a vaporware saga, it's a fully enjoyable game, fully satisfactory and autoconclusive in its local plot.
