Bugged
| Author: | Anssi Raisanen | | Genre: | Surreal | | Released: | 2001 | | Review: | A clever and silly thinking-outside-the-box piece in the tradition of A New Day and Cheater. Your cousin has written a terrible text adventure in a generic fantasy setting, riddled with bugs which make it impossible to progress by normal means. Can you finish the game by abnormal means? Short, linear, very forgiving. Contains gentle hints.

Wurm
The Sound of One Hand Clapping
| Author: | Erica Sadun | | Genres: | Fantasy>Eastern
Religious | | Released: | 1993 | | License: | Shareware | | Review: | An evocative game in a beautiful setting with Buddhist decor. Your
task is to banish Black Dragon from the World Beyond. To do this, you will
have to get the cooperation of the other dragons (who symbolize various
elemental forces), despite the uncertainty of their own fate if you succeed.
Intriguing but simple puzzles, good sense of freedom, built-in hints in the
form of visions gained from meditating. It is possible to get into no-win
situations without realizing it.

Words of Power
| Author: | Stark Springs | | Genre: | Fantasy | | Released: | 2002 | | Review: | Easy, generous game-play, a reasonably effective plot, and a nifty magic mechanic combine to make this game accessible and charming. The game offers interesting graphical enhancements to the standard features of interactive fiction, including images of all the NPCs and a set of buttons that simplify spell-casting. Not all aspects of the work shine equally -- the prose has its rough moments, object descriptions tend to be little more than restatements of what you already saw in the room description, and some elements of the fantasy setting seem a bit tired. There is enough that's fresh to keep the game going, however, and it's short and entertaining enough not to wear out its welcome.

The Frenetic Five vs. the Seven Deadly Dwarves
Part of Frenetic Five
| Author: | Neil deMause | | Genres: | Humor>Satire
Superhero | | Released: | 2002 | | Review: | Parody of both Interactive Fiction conventions and the conventions of the superhero genre. Strong on verbal humor and puns, with several sidekick NPCs; puzzles are (deliberately) rather arbitrary. Probably frustrating to new IF players.

Silence of the Lambs 2
| Author: | The Thief of Bad Gags | | Released: | 2002 | | Review: | A rather slight game about a journey to a dairy. It features one deceptive non-puzzle, a really bad pun, and some hilarious character graphics. The reward for finishing is also quite nice, in that (I think I'm not spoiling much here) one winds up in a room full of many varieties of cheese, all with lovingly-described smells, tastes, and appearances. In structure, then, it resembles an IF Art Show piece appended to a work of Speed-IF.
The puzzles are tricky and not always fairly clued, and there's not much by way of plot. It's mostly worth playing if you really, really like cheese, or if you are in a very silly mood.

Castle Ralf
| Authors: | Doug Clutter and Steve Vance | | Released: | 1987 | | License: | Shareware | | Review: | A puzzle romp.
The premise: You've gotten lost on the road and wind up at an abandoned
castle. The former occupant is some kind of mad genius who left puzzles
and other oddities scattered around to get in the way of anyone exploring
the place. The style is goofy and full of self-consciously
text-adventure-like situations.
Puzzles are hard, but fair. The user interface is interesting: the player
has the option of typing verbs or choosing them from a menu. Thus, you
have in front of you at all times a list of all the necessary verbs in the
game. Features automapping.

El gorrón del tren
The Chasing
| Author: | Anssi Raisanen | | Genre: | Fantasy | | Released: | 2001 | | Review: | A pleasant and reasonably easy jaunt through the countryside of a sort of Edwardian fantasy world at a time when there's no great treasure to unearth or evil wizard to defeat. You're a landed gentleman in pursuit of seven escaped horses, each named for a significant quality of character (Courage, Defiance, etc.)
I was impressed with how good-natured it all is: all the NPC's are friendly and eager to help, pretty much all the areas are described as pleasant, picturesque, or elegant (to the point where this constitutes a weakness in the prose), and everything the player does exhibits goodwill and strength of character.

Adventure
| Alternate Titles: | Abenteuer, ADVENT, Adventure in Humongous Cave, Aventura, Aventure, Avontuur, Colossal Adventure - Jewels of Darkness, Colossal Cave, nuntalyli'u, Original Adventure
| | Authors: | William Crowther and Donald Woods | | Genre: | Fantasy>Cave crawl | | Released: | 1976 | | Review: | The original. What more can be said? This was the first adventure game; the whole genre is named after it. Without it, Infocom would have been just another maker of business software, Sierra On-line would be primarily known for adaptations of coin-op videogames, and Volker Blasius would have a life. A detailed description of this game's history and significance can be found in Graham Nelson's "The Craft of Adventure".
Ignoring the profound historical significance for a moment, it's a treasure hunt in a cave, like most of the early adventures (including Zork). It has a verb-noun parser, minimal detail, two big annoying mazes, magic words, nonsense puzzles, and occasional death without warning. None
of this matters. Download it anyway. You cannot consider yourself a true adventurer until you've played this game.
There are many different versions of this game, some of which include
additions by later authors. The original gave a total of 350 points.
Later additions usually award a higher final score.

The Awakening
| Alternate Titles: | El Despertar
| | Author: | Dennis Matheson | | Genre: | Horror>Lovecraftian | | Released: | 1998 | | Review: | A short, simple horror game in the Lovecraftian mode. The puzzles are logical and sensible, and objects are found in logical places. The best thing about the game is the prose, which is expansive but not wordy. The only real problem here is that the game's main audience, Lovecraft fans, are likely to figure things out far too early.
Rating: ****
